A Whip for Van Tromp by J Seymour Lucas

This is a print from 1901.

The famous Dutch admiral, Van Tromp, had hoisted a broom at the masthead of his ship, as a menace that he woulkd sweep the English from the seas; the English admiral had replied by hoisting a whip at his masthead (said to be the origin of the Royal Pennant) as an obvious re-joinder. The picture shows a naval architect exhibiting the model of a new warship (a whip for Van Tromp) to certain lords and gentlemen of the Court of King Charles II, the stout, decorated man being evdently the Merry Monarch himself.
